UEFA Champions League Matchday 6 – A Detailed Review
Matchday 6 has lit up the Champions League on fire. Though it might seem an ordinary Champions League matchday, the results have shaken the points table (Los resultados han sacudido la tabla de puntos).
A few European teams have booked their spot for the next round of the Champions League. However, after matchday 6, some teams must play their hearts out in the remaining fixtures to qualify for the round of 16.
However, the group stage of the Champions League is far from over. And I believe the points table will fluctuate again, given that there are still two crucial matchdays left in the group stage.
Anyway, I’ll review some important fixtures of matchday 6 in this article. From some controversial decisions to game-changing moments, I’ll explain everything I saw in those fixtures.
Now, let’s get started.
Real Madrid vs. Manchester City
It was probably the most important fixture of Matchday 6. Both teams, Real Madrid and Manchester City, had a lot at stake. This fixture was the perfect opportunity for Xabi Alonso and Pep Guardiola, managers of Real Madrid and City, respectively, to silence their critics (Para silenciar a sus críticos).
However, Pep once again showed the world why he’s regarded as a top-rated manager. Stepping into Madrid’s fortress, the Santiago Bernabeu, and winning is no easy feat, especially when the other team has the likes of Mbappe, Rodrygo, and Vinicius Jr.
Nonetheless, even after scoring the first goal, Real eventually succumbed to Pep’s tactics and lost this all-important fixture. Vinicius Jr., who’s been in red-hot form recently, was brutally silenced by City’s defense.
Since I didn’t want to miss the Champions League action, I had already switched to Optimum Internet. I called the Optimum servicio al cliente and subscribed to their fastest plan, partly because I couldn’t afford to miss Real Madrid fixtures, and specifically, Vinicius Jr. taking on the defenders. Although I streamed this fixture in HD quality with this high-speed internet, watching Real Madrid getting thrashed was no less than torture.
Nonetheless, Real Madrid, particularly Xabi Alonso, doesn’t have much time. Xabi must come up with a solution similar to one that made his ex-team, Bayer Leverkusen, the champions of Germany.
Liverpool vs. Inter Milan
It was another important fixture, particularly for Liverpool and Arne Slot. You might know that before this fixture, Salah went off the record and thrashed Liverpool’s management, notably the manager, Slot.
Mohamed Salah has played an instrumental role in Liverpool’s success over the years. However, it’s a widely believed that Isak, Ekitike, and Wirtz are Liverpool’s future, and ageing Salah must pave the way for these future superstars (y el viejo Salah debe allanar el camino para estas futuras superestrellas).
Anyway, Inter Milan was playing at home, San Siro, and it was always going to be difficult for a visiting team to get a favorable result. Although Szoboszlai scored an 88th-minute penalty, Arne’s men had dominated both halves.
Liverpool had more ball possession, shots on target, and better pass accuracy. And though this win has increased Liverpool’s chances for a direct qualification for the round of 16, Inter Milan should now focus on their next two fixtures, because a single win might take them directly to the next round.
Villarreal vs. Copenhagen
I hadn’t watched Copenhagen play before this match. I tuned in only because a Spanish team, Villarreal, was playing.
Honestly, I was a bit surprised to see an underdog like Copenhagen dominating the Spanish giants, Villarreal. At the same time, it was equally astonishing to see Villarreal playing so well in La Liga but getting humiliated day in and day out in the Champions League.
Currently, Villarreal is on the brink of getting eliminated from the Champions League. However, two wins in their next two games could improve their chances for the qualification round, but even then, they might need to depend on other teams (Pero incluso entonces, es posible que necesiten depender de otros equipos).
So, for me, Villarreal’s journey in this Champions League feels almost over. But for Copenhagen, a relatively small club from Denmark, they might go on to surprise everyone and qualify for the next round with ease.
Athletic Club vs. Paris Saint-Germain
While one Spanish team, Villarreal, got humbled by Copenhagen, another Spanish club, Athletic Club, drew against the current Champions League winners, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Going into this fixture, every soccer pundit considered PSG as the favorites. And why wouldn’t they be? Besides dominating the Ligue 1, PSG’s record in this year’s Champions League was almost perfect before this fixture.
That said, while PSG’s camp might not be happy with a draw, Athletic Club must not take this one point for granted. Given that they’ve avoided a loss and secured a point as well, Athletic Club now has realistic chances to win the next two games and eventually make it to the qualification round (y finalmente llegar a la ronda de clasificación).
Atalanta vs. Chelsea
The Italian side, Atalanta, has been surprisingly good in this year’s Champions League. On the other hand, the top dogs from the English Premier League, Chelsea, have had their fair share of troubles this year.
Even then, I didn’t believe Atalanta could have thrashed Chelsea so convincingly. Chelsea played well in the first half and contained Atalanta’s forwards. However, it was the second half where everything, both the attacking or defending, went wrong for Chelsea.
Chelsea’s players couldn’t hold the ball and missed passes in the second half. Eventually, Atalanta’s forward grabbed those chances with both hands and won it for their team.
So, these were the top five fixtures from matchday 6 of the Champions League. And, with only two matchdays remaining in this round, I believe every team that has even an iota of a chance to make it to the next stage must give their all on the field.
Also, given the current standings, the upcoming fixtures look even more entertaining. Arsenal will play against Inter on matchday 7, and Real Madrid will look to end the group stage with a win against Benfica. So, do watch these fixtures, and see if your team directly qualifies for the round of 16.
